Our History

The Abby Chapel in Seal Harbor and the Union Church in Northeast Harbor are part of our parish. Sunday worship services alternate between these two locations every six months. The churches are 4 miles apart.

We are small, inclusive, community church with a strong commitment to mission and outreach, and a strong commitment to serve anyone in need in our community. Our parish includes the Union Church in Northeast Harbor and the Abby Chapel in Seal Harbor

Our roots locally date back over 100 years. Our church members and supporters are both year-round residents and summer residents. We come out of many different religious traditions, and some come from no particular religious tradition. Theologically, politically, and socially we have diverse viewpoints, so we sometimes practice “disagreeing and holding hands at the same time.” We seek to be a church where we can all ask and wrestle with our deepest and most important questions.

Our church historically is Congregational, Unitarian, and Baptist. In the late 1970’s we became a United Church of Christ and we participate in UCC educational, mission, and social justice projects in Maine and world-wide.

In 2005, after a year of study and discussion, we voted to become an Open and Affirming Congregation, fully welcoming and including those of all family structures and sexual orientations. We happily invite you to join us for Morning Worship, or one of our several times of fellowship and education. Newcomers and visitors always enrich the life of our church!
